Tulipa ‘Stresa’ is a spectacular kaufmanniana tulip variety producing Indian yellow flower petals that are dashed on the outside with patches of red.
‘Stresa’ tulips will flower throughout March and April, reaching a height of approximately 20cm/8″, above broad, lance-shaped, grey-green leaves with speckles of purple.
It was also awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit due to its consistent results, ease to grow and excellent disease and pest resistance.
These spring flowering bulbs are fully hardy in the UK and will return to flower year upon year. They are best planted in small groups in borders, around shrubs and conifers or in containers on terraces, balconies or patios. The flowers are also ideal when cut, demanding a position in the cut flower garden.
‘Stresa’ tulip bulbs can be grown in a wide array of soil conditions, whether it is acidic, alkaline or neutral, so long as there is sufficient drainage. They will prefer a position of full sun, in a place where tulips have not been grown in recent years, preferably protected from strong winds. Look to plant the bulbs around 10cm/4″ deep and 10cm/4″ apart.
Remove any flowers when they begin to fade and support with a top dressing of slow acting fertiliser, such as bone-meal, after planting to assist the flowering.
