Deputy Manager – Outdoor Living & Christmas

Full-Time, Permanent

Gates Garden Centre is seeking a Deputy Retail Manager. This is an interesting and varied role, focusing on Outdoor Living (Garden Furniture, BBQs & Accessories) in the spring / summer and Christmas in the winter months. The successful applicant will receive a competitive salary, working full-time including either Saturday or Sunday each week.

You will provide managerial support, helping to maintain and improve sales and customer service throughout the department. You will provide assistance in the supervision of staff, while maintaining the standards of the shop floor. You will also assist with ordering, inventory, stock and delivery processes.

Customer Service

  • Provide customers with excellent levels of Customer service
  • Ensure customers have the best shopping experience
  • Deal with customer complaints and enquiries, providing the best possible outcome

Sales

  • Ensure that targets are achieved and, where possible, exceeded
  • Excellent product knowledge in order to advise and answer customer queries
  • Monitor staff service levels in order to maximise store sales

Visual Merchandising

  • Attract, engage and motivate customers to make purchases through visual presentation techniques
  • Keep the store in great shape and looking its best
  • Keep stock clean and presentable at all times

Training & Development

  • Provide assistance with the induction and training of new starters
  • Assist with the development of existing staff
  • Ensure the personal appearance of sales staff is in line with company guidelines

About you

  • You will have previous retail experience, ideally with some management experience too
  • A flexible team player, who is energetic, enthusiastic and dynamic
  • Excellent customer service skills and a friendly personality
  • Professional, responsible and well-presented
  • Excellent Time Management skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • IT skills- Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

Plant Area Assistant

Full-Time Permanent

We currently have a vacancy for a full-time Plant Area Assistant.

The ideal candidate will:

  • have experience of working in a Garden Centre or other horticultural training or background
  • have a friendly personality with an ability to easily engage with and connect with our customers
  • have excellent knowledge of plants, plant care and maintenance
  • have some knowledge of plant pests and diseases
  • be able to recognise and act on sales opportunities
  • have an ability to work well as part of a small team

Applicants must also be professional and well-presented and have excellent customer service skills.

You will be required to work one alternating weekend day.

Tills and Customer Service Assistant

Full-Time Permanent

We are currently looking for a full-time Till and Customer Service Assistant to join our growing team.

We pride ourselves on our high standards of retailing, visual presentation and customer service.  As the ideal candidate, you will have retail experience and a passion for excellent customer service.  You will need to be comfortable working as part of a team, whilst showing an outgoing and energetic personality.  You will need to be approachable, friendly, presentable and efficient in your day to day work.  A confident communicator, who can interact with customers and pass on product knowledge where appropriate.

This role requires first class customer service skills, including processing customer purchases through the tills both accurately and efficiently.  You will help our customers with any queries they might have as well as packing and liaising with the Customer Support Team.  You will also be required to merchandise new and existing stock.

In addition to this, the role does involve some stock control and working with the Security Team and other departments as necessary. Also preferred, but not essential, is experience of upselling and link sales.

Senior Buyer / Merchandiser – Farm Shop

Full-Time, Permanent

The large-scale, state-of-the-art farm shop at Gates Garden Centre has gone from strength to strength since opening in August 2019. We are now looking for an experienced Buyer / Merchandiser to execute the trading and sourcing strategy for the Farm Shop to meet our growth targets.

The role:

A hands-on role, you will be responsible for identifying and sourcing ranges that drive sales and improve margin to lead the Farm Shop to the next level. You will build strong relationships with suppliers and keep up to date with current trends to ensure that our offer is always seasonally relevant and attractive to customers.

On a day to day basis the Farm Shop Buyer / Merchandiser will:

  • Plan & build product ranges to make best use of the available retail space and meet key seasonal deadlines
  • Actively trade the department to maximise sales and minimise terminal stock
  • Ensure the right products are available at the right time
  • Place and track all product orders
  • Help develop and track monthly sales plans
  • Set product prices, markdowns and discounts
  • Maximise profit margin while offering value to our customers
  • Manage budgets, reporting performance to the senior management team
  • Provide information in relation to product launches, sales & stock levels to the eCommerce and Marketing teams
  • Work with our Visual Merchandising team to create attractive, shoppable displays

The candidate:

  • Previous food buying / merchandising experience in a retail environment
  • Commercially aware
  • Experience with WSSIs & OTB an advantage
  • Results driven and happy to work to targets
  • Highly organised and reliable, with great attention to detail
  • Team player, energetic, enthusiastic and dynamic
  • Passionate about food quality and provenance

Retail Assistants – Farm Shop

Full-Time & Part-Time, Permanent

Gates Garden Centre is seeking Retail Assistants for the Farm Shop, working either full-time or part-time, including either Saturday or Sunday each week.

We offer great value to our customers on a wide range of speciality food goods. We support this with a focus on delivering ‘old fashioned’, genuine and friendly customer service.

Our Retail Assistants are very important as they represent Gates when they serve many hundreds of customers every week. This is an important responsibility and comes with a high degree of trust. A strong sense of passion, commitment and attention to detail are essential for this role.

The role:

  • Serving customers quickly, efficiently and in a friendly manner
  • Ensuring customers have the best shopping experience, both in the shop and at the checkout
  • Excellent product knowledge in order to advise and answer customer queries
  • Caring for stock (rotation is key) to ensure customers leave with food in perfect condition
  • Handling deliveries
  • Keeping the shop in great shape and looking its best at all times
  • You will be expected to cover occasional other shifts when colleagues are absent on annual leave.
