Hyacinthus orientalis ‘Pink Pearl’ is a popular choice for growing indoors in pots, providing a burst of winter colour and fragrance via its intense blooms of vibrant pink flowers. These prepared bulbs can also be used outside after their initial intended use indoors.

These ‘Pink Pearl’ bulbs have been through a sequence of cold treatments, initiating the growing process, to allow them to flower in time for Christmas.

For successful forced flowers, fill the bottom of a pot or bowl with a wet layer of bulb fibre. Plant the bulbs, ensuring that they are not touching each other or the sides of the container and then fill around the bulbs with more bulb fibre or compost with the tip of the bulbs just poking through.

For a healthy root system the container should then be moved into a dark environment such as a bin bag and placed in a dark cool corner of a cellar, shed or garage. Check regularly and water if the growing medium is dying out.

Once the roots have developed and the shoots have reached around 5cm/2″ in length, the containers can be moved indoors, into a cool room away from light to allow the leaves to green up. Once greened, they can then be moved into a warmer more humid atmosphere and allowed to flower.

When planted this way, ‘Pink Pearl’ bulbs should flower in time for Christmas, creating a beautiful decoration, filing the room with their delightful scent.

After flowering, prepared hyacinths can be allowed to die down naturally and then planted outside at a depth of twice their own height where they will flower the following year in the usual period of March and April.
