Hyacinthus orientalis ‘Purple Sensation’ will grow relatively large, deliciously perfumed, purple trumpet-shaped flowers. These vibrant flowers will add colour and fragrance to any decorative display, which can be enjoy in time for Christmas.
These ‘Purple Sensation’ bulbs have been through a sequence of cold treatments, kickstarting the growing process which allows them to flower in time for Christmas, if cared for appropriately.
When growing forced flowers, fill the bottom of a pot or container with a wet layer of bulb fibre. Plant the bulbs, making sure that they are not touching the sides of the container or each other and then fill around the bulbs with more bulb fibre or compost with the tip of the bulbs just poking through.
For a healthy root system the container should then be moved into a dark environment such as in a bin bag and then placed in a dark cool corner of a cellar, shed or garage. Check it regularly and water if the growing medium is dying out.
Once the roots have developed and the shoots have reached approximately 5cm/2″ in length, the container can be moved indoors, into a cool room away from light to allow the leaves to green up. Once greened, they can then be moved into a warmer more humid atmosphere and allowed to flower.
When planted this way, ‘Purple Sensation’ bulbs should flower in time for Christmas, creating a beautiful decoration, filing the room with their delightful scent.
After flowering, prepared hyacinths can be allowed to die down naturally and then planted outside at a depth of twice their own height where they will flower the following year in the usual period of March and April.
