Native to the mountainous regions of Turkey, Fritillaria imperialis ‘Orange’, also known as simply ‘Crown imperial’, is a spectacular plant that is grown for its impressive clusters of bell-shaped flowers that appear in mid to late spring.

Bringing an essence of the exotic, this wonderful perennial is perfect for filling out the back of a spring border as a backdrop to other flowering plants, or to be dotted amongst other flowers offering a source of vertical relief.

Alternatively, let them naturalise in wild gardens, rockeries, under shrubs or in grass, provided the soil remains moist during the growing period. They can also be used as excellent cut flowers, to be made into a striking indoor floral arrangement.

Plant Fritillaria imperialis ‘Orange’ bulbs around 15cm/6″ deep and 25cm/10″ apart from each other to allow space for the flowers to bloom. These bulbs are vulnerable to rotting when they sit in wet soil so will need plenty of grit. They are also fully hardy and can be left undisturbed for many years.
