Cornus alba ‘Kesselringii’, also known as white dogwood, are usually grown for their distinctive winter colour when their leafless stems are able to stand out as a rare source of variation within a drab winter garden.
This wonderful, vigorous, deciduous shrub will quickly form a thicket of these colourful stems in the winter as well as leaves that turn red or purple in the autumn, small cream coloured flowers in the spring or summer and finally some white berries in the autumn.
Easy to grow, this Cornus variety is a member of the RHS Plants for Pollinators collection, recognising its value in attracting and supporting bees and other pollinators in the garden.
When planting, look for a position of full sun or partial shade with soil that is moist but well drained. These shrubs tend to be generally pest or disease free and are fully hardy in the UK down to around -20 degrees.
