Hyacinthus orientalis ‘White Pearl’ produces upright clusters of star-shaped flowers that bloom a brilliantly clean white, all growing upwards on a thick conical stem. These bulbs will make a fantastic gift or decoration for a beautiful and elegant Christmas display and will provide a stunning fragrance that can fill a room.

These ‘White Pearl’ bulbs have been through a sequence of cold treatments, kickstarting the growing process, allowing them to flower in time for Christmas, if cared for appropriately.

When forcing early flowers such as Hyacinth, fill the bottom of a pot or container with a wet layer of bulb fibre. Plant the bulbs, making sure that they are not touching the sides of the container or each other and then fill around the bulbs with more bulb fibre or compost with the tip of the bulbs just poking through.

In order to help promote a healthy root system, the container should then be moved into a dark environment such as in a bin bag and then placed in a dark cool corner of a cellar, shed or garage. Keep an eye on it and water if the growing medium is dying out.

Once the shoots have reached approximately 5cm/2″ in length and the roots have developed, the container can be moved indoors, into a cool shaded room to allow the leaves to green up. Once greened, they can then be moved into a warmer more humid atmosphere and allowed to flower.

When planted this way, ‘White Pearl’ bulbs will flower in time for Christmas, creating a beautiful decoration, filing the room with their delightful scent.

After flowering, prepared hyacinths can be allowed to die down naturally and then planted outside at a depth of twice their own height where they will flower the following year in the usual period of March and April.
