Tulip ‘Wilsoniana’ (10 bulbs)

Also known as ‘Mountain Tulip’, Tulipa ‘Wilsoniana’ grows truly unique, massive vermilion-red flowers with contrasting yellow stamens and a central black blotch. Originating in the mountains of Turkmenistan, these flowers are exceptionally hardy and distinct with blooms that are often larger than their leaves and exceptional resistance to cold, drought and poor soil conditions due to their harsh origins.

Glaucous waxy leaves will begin to emerge around January, gradually developing an oscillating edge, with their stunning flowers appearing from April through to May at a height of around 12cm/5″.

These spring flowering bulbs will re-emerge for several years in borders, around shrubs and conifers and in containers on terraces and balconies. Alternatively, they can be dispersed together in grass in order to gradually naturalise over time creating swathes of early season colour. Regardless of location, they should ideally be planted together in groups for the greatest visual impact.

‘Wilsoniana’ tulip bulbs can be grown in almost any soil, be it acid, alkaline or neutral, provided there is good drainage. Look for an area of full sun, preferably in a place where tulips have not been grown in recent years. Plant the bulbs approximately 10cm/4″ deep and 10cm/4″ apart.
