Potentially the blackest tulip ever bred, Tulipa ‘Queen of Night’ is an extremely popular and distinct perennial tulip variety that produces breathtakingly pretty deep purple black tulips. These tulips are highly regarded for their uniquely intense dark shade and are a favourite of breeders trying to create a true black variety.

Expect ‘Queen of Night’ blooms to flower between April and May, growing to a height of around 60cm/24″.

These captivating spring flowering bulbs can be used in pots, beds, border or as cut flowers, like many other tulips, however, due to their uniquely dark shade they may be worth considering differently. They tend to not instantly draw the eye unlike other brighter shades and should instead be planted against a pale background such as a white or cream wall to create fantastic contrast.

This contrast can also be achieved by combining ‘Queen of Night’ with other light and bright single late tulip varieties. These will typically be white, however, reds and yellows can work just as well creating a fantastic complimentary contrast. When planting in pots, try to use lighter, preferably white pots in order to accentuate their intense darkness.

‘Queen of Night’ tulip bulbs are able to be grown in practically any soil, be it acidic, alkaline or neutral, provided there is effective drainage. Look for a position of full sun, in a place where tulips have not been grown in recent years, preferably protected from strong winds. Look to plant the bulbs around 10cm/4″ deep and 10cm/4″ apart.

Remove flowers as they fade and support after planting with a top dressing of slow acting fertiliser, such as bone-meal, to assist the flowering.
