The original variety from which many of the famous ‘Bishop’ dahlias have been bred, Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ is a stunning, multi-award winning variety that produces captivating semi-double red flowers. These distinctive flowers contrast beautifully with the dark bronze-green foliage, flowering voraciously up until the first frosts.

This variety is extremely popular with bees and other pollinators as recognised by its inclusion in the RHS Plants for Pollinators collection. It is also extremely reliable and dependable, winning the RHS Award of Garden Merit back in 1928, further exemplifying its timeless longevity.

To plant your Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ tuber, it is best to do so in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. It is important to plant it at the correct depth, with the ‘eyes’ facing upwards, and to firm the soil around the tuber. Water well after planting and continue to keep the soil moist throughout the growing season.

When it comes to maintenance, regular deadheading will encourage more blooms to form and prevent the plant from becoming leggy. You may also want to stake the plant as the heavy blooms can cause it to lean.

In terms of care, Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ should be lifted and stored over winter in colder climates to protect the tuber from frost. In milder climates, it can be left in the ground and covered with a thick layer of mulch. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the striking blooms of the Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ for many seasons to come.
