Crocus sativus, also known as the saffron crocus, is an autumn flowering perennial that grows rich lavender blooms with deep purple veins. Blooming from September to November, these flowers provide a vital source of nectar and pollen for queen bumblebees emerging from hibernation.

Growing to a compact height of around 10cm/4″, these flowers are ideal for growing in pots or for naturalising in grass, where they can be used to provide swathes of stunning colour.

Beyond their flowers, a major attraction of these distinct flowers is their ability to produce the cooking spice saffron (the most expensive spice in the world) in the form of three, long, deep-red stigmas that grow from the centre of the flower.

Plant these Crocus sativus bulbs 8cm deep into gritty soil, and for the best results, plant them in groups to eventually create a blanket of blooms.
