A very unusual Canna, ‘Cleopatra’ produces large and captivating yellow flowers that are adorned with red spots as well as scattered fully red or orange flowers. These vibrant blossoms stand out against its stunning foliage that is made up of large, lance-shaped leaves which may appear green, dark-chocolate, or a combination of both.

Flowering from August through to September, Canna ‘Cleopatra’ also received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, recognising its excellent reliability, output, disease resistance and ease to grow.

Canna lilies look their best when massed along walls and hedges or in garden beds where they proudly stand out, reaching a height of around 60cm/24″. They are also spectacular on a patio as they are well suited to container growing.

Look for a warm, sunny and sheltered position with light sandy soil that is enriched with a little well rotted manure or bonemeal.

Keep Canna bulbs moderately dry until roots are formed and young sprouts are showing. Gradually increase watering as the plant develops and water freely during the flowering season. A light application of a complete fertiliser when the shoots first appear and weak liquid manure when the flower spikes appear is beneficial.

When the flowers fade and the stems show signs of decay, water should be gradually withheld to induce a thorough ripening for the next year. The pots should be stored in a dry place until the time for repotting comes.
