Garlic ‘Early Purple Wight’, Allium sativum, is an easy to grow softneck variety of autumn planted garlic that produces strong-flavoured, long-lasting bulbs.

Best planted in the autumn for overwintering, ‘Early Purple Wight’ bulbs are frost hardy and can be harvested from as early as late May.

In recognition of their consistent yield and ease to grow, this variety received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Garlic requires a free-draining, fertile soil in a sunny position. Thoroughly dig over the site to remove any weeds and add a general purpose fertiliser to improve yields.

Break the garlic into cloves and plant individual cloves 3cm/1″ deep and 10cm/4″ apart.

Lift the garlic out of the soil in mid summer as the leaves start to die down. Leave them on the surface to ripen for a few days and then store in a light airy position that is dry and frost-free.
