Also known as the French grey shallot, ‘Griselle’ is often regarded in France as the ‘true shallot’, producing a purplish pink flesh that has a fine strong flavour with a spicy taste that cooks particularly well alongside beef.

Sweeter and milder than onions, shallots contain twice the amount of vitamin C and are rich in vitamins A, B and E. They excel in sauces, dressings or salads and are easy to prepare and slice.

Best planted in the autumn for overwintering, ‘Giselle’ shallots give you a good harvest of uniform, banana-shaped bulbs that make picking easy in early summer.

Sets should be ideally planted in loose, well-drained yet fertile soil with the addition of a nutrient-boosting feed or fertiliser to further improve yields.

Plant at a depth of 3cm/1″ and a spacing of around 12cm/5″. Check the sets every few days and re-plant any that have been disturbed by birds until growth starts.

If early hard frosts are forecast, protect shoots with a mulch of leaf mould or straw and water as normal when normal temperatures rise during late spring. When harvested, these shallots will store well in a cool, dry, frost-free place, giving you a sustained supply of spicy bulbs.
