A cluster of Dahlia ‘Cactus Mixed’ tubers will produce a stunning array of vibrant double flowerheads that are idyllic as a focal point in a summer border or patio container.
These striking, large blooms also make for excellent cut flowers. Despite not being particularly hardy and needing protection throughout the winter, cactus Dahlia tend to stand up well against inclement weather as they are less prone to being weighed down by heavy rain, or blown about by wind.
These tubers should be planted during spring, after the danger of frost has passed and will usually flower throughout summer and autumn until the first frosts. Keep picking them and one dahlia tuber will produce hundreds of flowers making them ideal for lovers of cut flowers.
Plant these tubers 15 cm deep and 60 cm apart into well drained soil with a good supply of humus. We recommend digging the soil over before planting. For early flowering, these tubers may be started off in boxes from the beginning of April, using light soil mixed with peat. Keep the boxes cool and free of frost and plant the sprouted tubers when the dangers of frost have passed.
Keep the plants well watered and deadhead to prolong flowering. Cut back to near ground level in the autumn, before lifting and storing for the winter.
