A vigorous blooming shrub, Camellia japonica ‘Desire’ will produce an abundance of flowers throughout late winter and early spring, welcoming in the new season.
These white to pale blush pink fully-double blooms tend towards a darker pink at the edges, contrasting beautifully against the dark-green, dense, evergreen foliage. The flowers are produced over several months between late winter and early to mid spring, appearing in large quantities.
A slow-grower, it has a shapely, upright habit and will usually reach a mature height of around 3m making it versatile enough to use in a wide variety of gardens. It is ideal for incorporating into a mixed shrub border and can also be used in woodland gardens or as a screen or hedge. They can even be used in a tub or large container as a specimen plant.
Camellias are popular for their winter and spring flowering, providing a source of colour when little else is in bloom. They can be planted any time of the year, provided that the ground is not too frosty. Try to find a position of partial shade, ideally with a healthy dose of early sun but protection from the most intense mid-day heat. They are lime-hating plants, meaning that they do not grow well in alkaline-based soils, so if your garden soil is more alkaline, then make sure to use a healthy amount of ericaceous compost when planting into a large pot or container.
Water the camellia well before removing it from the pot and when planting on, use ericaceous compost and a fertiliser or feed that is suitable for ericaceous plants, such as Azalea, Camellia & Rhododendron Continuous Release Plant Food or Liquid Ericaceous Feed.
