Kerr’s Pink Seed Potatoes are a ‘Heritage Potato’ variety that are traditionally cooked with their skins on.
They produce short oval pink skinned tubers with creamy flesh and a very floury texture.
Harvested approximately 16-22 weeks after planting, these potatoes are ideal for mashing, chipping, roasting and as jacket potatoes.
Kerr’s Pink Main Crop potato tubers should be planted outside from March onwards, 10-15cm deep and 20-30cm apart in a line, leaving at least 30cm between the lines to allow space to grow.
Before planting, Seed Potatoes should be placed on a cool, bright windowsill for 4-6 weeks to encourage them to sprout. This process is known as ‘chitting’ and will help to prepare the potato tuber for planting.
Once planted, draw soil up around new shoots to protect them from frost damage and prolong the growing time. This process also protects developing potatoes from sunlight which can cause them to turn green and poisonous. Keep potatoes well watered during warm dry weather.
Main Crop Seed Potatoes should be ready approximately 16-22 weeks after planting. When ready to harvest, cut back haulms (plant stalks) to ground level before gently lifting the plant up with a garden fork.
Carefully remove the potatoes from the plant and wash well before use in the kitchen.
