Gooseberry ‘Hinnonmaki Red’ bears an abundance of large, sweet, red berries.
Just like the yellow variety of the same name, this gooseberry has also been cultivated in Finland as a dessert variety. As a mid-season variety, ‘Hinnonmaki Red’ is an excellent choice for small gardens because of its compact growth. It is a trusted variety by gardeners alike and reliably produces a high yield each year.
As a well praised gooseberry, this variety has also been bred specifically for its winter hardiness and disease resistance.
Gooseberries can be planted between November and March during the dormant season.
Place your gooseberry plant into the ground to the depth of the soil marked on the stem. Leave sufficient space as per variety around the plant to ensure healthy growth.
Firm in well and water around the base thoroughly. Gooseberries may be grown using the bush or cordon method, as per preference. Apply a general fertiliser, such as Growmore, in the Spring to aide growth.
Although support may not be necessary during the growing season, winter protection is advised to protect against strong winds and frost.
Harvest your gooseberries during the Summer. Pick unripe fruit in early Summer for cooking and pick ripe fruit in late Summer for eating fresh.
