Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’, also known as red-barked dogwood, is most often grown for its distinctive red stems that stand out in autumn and winter when the green and silver variegated foliage fades away.

A medium-sized deciduous shrub, ‘Elegantissima’ will produce a mass of colourful and slender stems bright crimson. These stems become visible in autumn and winter when the white-margined, narrow leaves briefly fade away. It will also produce delicate white flowers through May and June as well as small white berries in the autumn.

Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’ is a member of the RHS Plants for Pollinators collection, recognising its value in attracting and supporting bees and other pollinators in the garden.

Fully hardy in the UK, it is a versatile shrub that thrives in various conditions. It prefers well-drained, moist soil but can adapt to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sand. This adaptable shrub is also tolerant of sun and partial shade, making it a suitable choice for various garden settings.
