Bulbs

Spring-flowering bulbs, such as daffodils, tulips, and crocuses, must be planted in the autumn as they require the cold winter soil to develop strong root systems. Summer-flowering varieties like dahlias and gladioli are tender and should be planted in the spring once the risk of frost has passed.

Generally, bulbs should be planted at a depth two to three times their own height and a distance two to three times their own width. Where possible we recommend checking the bulb packet for details.

Always plant your bulbs with the pointed tip going up. If it is unclear which end is pointed, then plant the bulb sideways in the soil as it will naturally self-right itself as it searches for the light.

The most important requirement for bulbs is well-drained soil as sitting in cold, waterlogged ground over winter is the primary cause of rot. If your garden has heavy clay soil, improve drainage by mixing a handful of horticultural grit or coarse sand into the base of the planting hole, and incorporate organic matter to improve the overall soil structure.
