Tulipa 'Ancilla' (Kaufmanniana Tulip), also known as Waterlily Tulips, are amongst some of the most striking flowers that could be planted in a garden. They begin with bright red outer petals, and then bloom to reveal white insides with a red and yellow centre.
These multi-coloured 'Ancilla' flowers are suitable for planting in containers, window boxes or rockeries, due to their short stems. Best for planting in the cool soil of October and November as it reduces the risk of pests interfering with the bulbs. This flower is a great naturaliser if left alone once planted, so it may be best planted where the bulbs can have some extra space.
Plant 'Ancilla' bulbs with the pointed end up around 10cm/4" deep and 10cm4" apart, unless they are planted in containers, in practically any soil, be it acid, alkaline or neutral. Be sure to feed the bulbs with a high potash fertiliser to help the flower for future years to come, and water the plant when in full leaf as it can easily and quickly dry out.
They will prefer an area of full sun, in a place where tulips have not been grown in recent years.
