The Prunus avium 'Summer Sun' Cherry Tree grows a large and reliable crop of sweetly flavoured cherries that are ready to enjoy from late July.
In addition to its wonderful fruit, this tree also has clusters of delightful white flowers that appear in spring and are a great way to attract bees and other pollinators into your garden. This has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society who have added it to their Plants for Pollinators Collection.
The mid-green oval shaped leaves then act as a lovely backdrop to the growing brilliant red, sweetly flavoured fruit. This is best enjoyed straight from the tree. To ensure you enjoy a bumper crop of delicious fruit each year, this needs another different variety to guarantee cross pollination, as it is not self-fertile.
To enjoy this cherry tree, plant it in a bright and sunny spot, in moist well drained soil. Ideally, choose a south or west facing position, that is sheltered. You will then enjoy many years of wonderful reliable crops of cherries. This easy-to-grown nature has earned it a prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit for its consistent and healthy growth.
The ‘Summer Sun’ Cherry Tree is available on different rootstocks to suit a variety of gardens. The rootstock controls the rate of growth so you can choose one most suited to the area you wish to plant it. The rootstock also ensures the tree fruits earlier than when grown on its own roots.
Gisela is a semi-dwarfing rootstock that is suitable for smaller gardens. This rootstock grows to a mature height of 2.5m (8ft) after 10 years. Trees grafted onto Gisela tend to have better disease resistance and the ability to grow in a range of environments.
Colt is a semi-vigorous rootstock that is suitable for larger gardens where space is not an issue. This rootstock grows to a mature height of 3.5m (11ft) after 10 years. Trees grafted onto Colt also benefit from better drought resistance and improved resilience to disease.
