'Red Winter' Onion Sets are an overwintering onion variety that has red tinged skin, superb flavour and keeps extremely well. The flesh is very crisp and sweet, and is ideal for use in casseroles, salads and stir-fries.
Onion sets are small immature onion bulbs that have been grown from seed in the previous year. This makes them easy and quick to plant at short notice. Sets should ideally be planted in autumn, so they are ready for an early harvest the following year, around June or July.
These sets can be grown evenly spaced in containers or in rows in planting beds. Thoroughly dig over the soil, removing any weeds and add a general fertiliser to improve yields. If early hard frosts are forecast, protect the shoots with a mulch of leaf mould or straw and water as normal when normal temperatures rise during late spring.
