This wonderful Malus x robusta ‘Red Sentinel’ is a magnificent variety of crab apple tree, that is a gardeners’ favourite for its wonderful winter interest. It is also robust and reliable to grow which has been recognised by its Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
Growing as a broadly upright tree with dark green leaves, the delightful small pink buds produce sparkling white blooms that contrast against the green foliage in spring. As the blooms begin to fade, it slowly changes into its cherry-like bright red fruit and the foliage transforms into golden hues.
Lasting well into winter, the wonderful ornamental fruits add vibrancy to the garden and are often used in Christmas decorations to enjoy around the home. It is also a great choice for attracting bees and pollinators into your garden, which has been recognised by its inclusion in the Royal Horticultural Society Plants for Pollinators Collection.
