Hyacinthus orientalis 'Anna Marie' is a pastel pink flower that gives off a strong, sweet scent. Its delightful colour and scent makes it the perfect addition to both gardens and homes. They are perfect for a table centre and are an excellent longer sustained alternative to cut flowers.
However unlike regular Hyacinth bedding bulbs, these prepared 'Anna Marie' bulbs have been through a sequence of cold treatments, triggering the growing process, in order to prepare them for early flowering in time for Christmas.
First wet a layer of bulb fibre and fill the bottom of a pot or bowl. Then place the bulbs close together into the container, making sure that they are not touching each other or the sides of the container. Then fill around the bulbs with more bulb fibre or compost with the tip of the bulbs just poking through.
In order to develop a healthy root system the container should then be moved into a blackout environment such as a bin bag and placed into a dark cool corner of a cellar, shed or garage. Make sure to check regularly and water if the growing medium is dying out.
Once the roots have developed and the shoots are around 5cm/2" in length, the containers can be brought indoors, into a cool room away from light to allow the leaves to green up. Once greened, they can then be moved into a warmer more humid atmosphere and allowed to flower.
When planted this way, these 'Anna Marie' bulbs should flower just in time for Christmas making for a beautiful table decoration, filing the room with their delightful fragrance.
After flowering, prepared hyacinths can be allowed to die down naturally and then planted outside at twice their own height where they will flower the following year around March and April.
