The Hosta 'Whirlwind' is a standout Hosta which produces dense mounds of heart-shaped, lime green to creamy white leaves with broad dark green margins. The centre of the leaf will change from creamy white in spring, to light green by midsummer and dark rich green in late summer.
Funnel-shaped lavender blooms appear between June and July, on 60cm long stems, however, the impressive foliage remains the primary attraction of this beautiful Hosta. An easy grower, they can reach heights of up to 50cm with a spread of 100cm.
Grown in-house at Gates Garden Centre, 'Whirlwind' Hostas are best when mixed in with other perennials in beds and borders in a shaded garden. They can be used in both city and informal cottage gardens and can also be planted in containers. They are particularly effective when used as groundcover or to underplant shrubs and roses.
Plant from its 3 litre pot into a position of partial shade, in fertile, moist and well drained soil. Watch for slugs and snails, remove spent foliage as required and clear up dead foliage when it dies back at the end of the growing season. Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
