Low maintenance and easy to grow, Hosta ‘Fire Island’ has glorious gold foliage that turns to a vibrant shade of green as the leaves mature. Perfect for brightening a range of dull spaces around the garden, it forms a neat mount of densely packed leaves which are further enhanced by beautiful red stems.
During the summer months, pale purple tube-like flowers add further colour and interest to the display which has the added benefit of being loved by bees and other pollinators. This has earned it a place in the Royal Horticultural Society Plants for Pollinators Collection.
A hardy perennial, it will thrive with minimal care and has good resistance to disease with consistently healthy growth. This reliability in the garden has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society who have given it the prestigious Award of Garden Merit. Although it can be prone to slug and snail damage to the leaves, there are a range of convenient and highly effective solutions in our pest control section that mean you can control this with ease.
To get the best from your hosta, plant it in a partially shaded or fully shaded, sheltered position, in moist but free draining soil. To help prevent slug and snail damage you can apply a top layered of stones around the base, which also has the benefit of retaining moisture around the roots.
