A member of the RHS Plants for Pollinators collection, Hebe 'Purple Shamrock' is a compact, rounded, evergreen shrub that will form a neat mound of long, variegated olive-green leaves, margined with a creamy-yellow border and delicately tinged pink to purple in the colder months. During the summer, it grows small, lovely lavender flowers that appear on the tips of branches attracting bees and other pollinators to the garden.
With its compact bushy nature, this shrub will only grow to a height and spread of around 45cm making it perfect as a loose, low dividing hedge or for mixing in among the front of a summer border or bed. It is also ideal for city gardens and makes for an excellent low maintenance patio or container plant and can even be used in window boxes.
It can handle a range of soils but will grow best in poor to moderately fertile, neutral to alkaline, well-drained soil. Plant in a position of full sun or partial shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Keep an eye out for aphids, leaf spot, downy mildew and root rot. Remove spent flowers after flowering to encourage a further flush of flowers and propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in the summer for home use.
