Chosen for their large, lustrous dark purple flowers, the ruffled edge and tubular shape of the blooms looks dramatic as they grow above sword-like green leaves. Reaching up to nearly a metre in height, they are an excellent choice for scattering through a cottage garden display with echinacea and delphiniums or give your beds and borders structure with them planted in the middle with smaller perennials, such as vibrant marigolds, at the front.

To get the best from your gladioli bulbs, stretch out the flowering season by making numerous staggered plantings between April and May.
