Gladioli are a wonderful flower to admire throughout the summer months and look particularly striking when grown in pots and containers to brighten patio and balcony areas or added to beds and borders for colour-filled displays. They can be planted with a wide range of plants, but we love them with alliums where the rounded star-burst blooms create a magnificent silhouette that contrasts with the spike of the gladioli.
If you want to enjoy these magnificent flowers as part of your cut flower garden, or added to a free space in your allotment, then these bulbs will keep well if they are dry. Stagger the planting time to every couple of weeks throughout spring, and you can enjoy florist quality flowers at home all summer.
To get the best floral display plant your Gladioli bulbs in clusters of five or more, roughly 10cm deep and 10cm apart. Find a position of full sun and somewhere that is sheltered from the wind. Water gladioli regularly during dry weather and add mulch to conserve moisture. After the buds have formed, consider if you need to stake the stems, if so, do this around 5cm from the base, avoiding the bulb – staking isn’t essential, but it does ensure that they don’t flop over.
