The Damson ‘Shropshire Prune’ Tree, also known as the Prune Damson or Westmoreland Damson, is a popular variety of Damsen Tree that is chosen for the intense, rich and flavourful fruit.
The fruit is perfect for a range of culinary dishes and is great for adding to puddings, jams or for gin. With a dark depth of colour that appears almost blue, the fruit is not only tasty but looks beautiful hanging from the tree.
In addition to its fruit, this tree has delightful white flowers that adorn the tree in spring. They are attractive to bees and other pollinators and have been added to the Royal Horticultural Society Plants for Pollinators Collection. For this reason, this tree makes a great addition to wildlife gardens, as well as cottage and informal gardens, to attract a range of pollinators into your outdoor space.
For added peace of mind, this Damson Tree has reliable and consistent growth that is well suited to the UK climate. This has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society who have given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit. To get the most from this tree, plant it in a bright and sunny spot, in moist well drained soil. Ideally plant it in a position with a south or west facing aspect, which is sheltered from the harsh wind.
This Damson ‘Shropshire Prune’ Tree is available on Myrobalan rootstock, which is semi-vigorous to vigorous. It is suitable for most soils and grows to an ultimate height of approximately 4.5 metres in 10 years. The rootstock of a tree controls the rate of growth and ensures the tree fruits earlier than when grown on its own roots.
