A hugely popular variety, Charlotte Second Early Potatoes have a firm yellow, waxy flesh and a wonderful flavour that is perfect for enjoying in a range of culinary dishes. An excellent choice to adding to a salad, it can also be enjoyed sauteed and even roasted with the skins left on.
In addition to being delicious to eat, this variety is robust and reliable to grow, with excellent resistance to pests and disease. This has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society who have given it the Award of Garden Merit.
A great choice for growing in smaller spaces, these seed potatoes will thrive planted in containers or potato bags.
Planting Guide
Plant Charlotte Second Early seed potatoes outside from March onwards, 10cm deep and 20cm apart in a line. Leave at least 30cm between lines to allow growing space.
Before planting, place the seed potatoes on a cool, bright windowsill for 4-6 weeks to encourage them to sprout. This process is known as ‘chitting’ and will help prepare the potato tuber for going in the ground.
Once planted, ‘earth up’ the potatoes by drawing the soil up around new shoots to protect them from frost damage and prolong the growing time. Earthing up also protects developing potatoes from sunlight which causes them to turn green and poisonous. Keep potatoes well-watered during dry or warm weather.
Harvesting Guide
When ready to harvest, cut back plant stalks to ground level before gently lifting the plant up with a garden fork.
Carefully remove the potatoes from the plant and wash well before use in the kitchen.
