Gertrude Jekyll® (Ausbord) is a medium sized English shrub rose bred by David Austin®. Always one of the first English roses to start flowering, its has masses of vibrant pink rosette shaped blooms that have a rich and complex old rose fragrance. It makes a wonderful addition to any rose garden and has been awarded the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit for its consistent and healthy growth. So, you have peace of mind that you will be enjoying the beauty of this enchanting rose for many years to come.
This early bloomer will repeat flower throughout the season and looks magnificent in a rose border or combined with other plants in mixed borders. We think it looks lovely in a large pot position near to doorways and entrances where you can enjoy the wonderful fragrance each day. If growing in a border, we recommend planting it in groups of the same variety for an impressive display, year after year. This beautiful English shrub rose is suitable for all soil types, and can be planted in a position of full sun or partial shade.
To get the best blooms from your Gertrude Jekyll shrub rose, plant it with Mycorrhizal Fungi to help the roots to establish and encourage good plant health. We also recommend regular feeding, once in late March/early April and again in July with Rose Food. Pruning should be done at the start of the year in January or February and after the first summer of flowers, when you can cut back all stems to 12″- 18″ (30-45cm) from the ground. In the next two years simply prune it back to half its height and after five years, you’ll only need to cut it back by a third.
Whilst this rose is in flower, we suggest regular deadheading to encourage new bud growth, so you can enjoy beautiful fragrant blooms.
