Tulipa ‘Red Riding Hood’ is an iconic Greigii tulip variety producing beautiful, scarlet-red flowers with a black centre that appears above elegant purple-striped, grey-green leaves.
‘Red Riding Hood’ will bloom throughout March and April, growing to a height of approximately 20cm/8″.
Due to its fantastic reliability, consistent results and thorough disease and pest resistance, this variety was awarded the coveted Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit in 1993.
These fully UK hardy spring flowering bulbs will flower for many years and are best planted in small groups within borders, containers, rock gardens or for naturalising in grass, creating a welcome source of striking and distinct early spring colour. They are also excellent as cut flowers, earning a position in the cut flower garden.
‘Red Riding Hood’ tulip bulbs can be grown in a wide array of soil conditions, be it acidic, alkaline or neutral, so long as there is sufficient drainage. They will prefer a position of full sun, in a place where tulips have not been grown in recent years, preferably protected from strong winds. Look to plant the bulbs around 10cm/4″ deep and 10cm/4″ apart.
Remove any flowers when they begin to fade and support with a top dressing of slow acting fertiliser, such as bone-meal, after planting to assist the flowering.
