A British bred, gardeners’ favourite for high yields and reliability. Early to flower, vigorous plants produce clusters of 25cm (10in) stringless fleshy pods of good flavour throughout the season.
How to sow
Sow indoors in trays or pots or direct sow outdoors. Indoors – fill seed trays or pots with good seed compost. Outdoors – prepare the soil by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones. Sow mid April to May indoors for transplanting. Sow in 7.5cm (3in) pots, 4cm (11/2in) deep. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and keep at around 18-20C (64-68F) until after germination which takes 7-10 days. Can also be sown direct outdoors May to early July once the soil has warmed, 15cm (6in) apart, 5cm (2in) deep and in rows 45cm (18in) apart.
How to grow
Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before planting out after all risk of frost` against support such as canes or netting. Hoe regularly and keep plants well watered. Mulch during dry periods.
