Small cream summer flowers are followed by bright orange lanterns in autumn. An easy perennial to grow, ideal in full sun borders, and great in dried displays.
How to sow
Place seed on the surface of a free draining damp compost and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Seal container inside a polythene bag and place at 15-20˚C (59-68˚F) until after germination which can take 1-6 months. Do not exclude daylight as this helps germination.
How to grow
Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow on in cooler conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after risk of frost, 60cm (24in) apart. Autumn sowings can be overwintered for planting in spring. For drying, cut stems when the lanterns start to show colour, hang upside down in a light airy position.
