The Itoh Peony ‘Julia Rose’ is a beautiful perennial that produces stunning, single to semi-double, blossoms that can change colour over time.
With buds of cherry red, they open out into a deep pink colour, fading later into apricot and orange as they mature. This means that a single plant can produce up to three different colours simultaneously, creating a stunning and diverse display.
Expect up to thirty blooms per plant with sturdy stems that don’t require staking, rising above a widely spreading bush of glossy green foliage. They can grow up to 75cm tall and 50cm wide and will flower in late spring to early summer for two to four weeks, depending on the weather.
Grown in-house at Gates Garden Centre, these Paeonies are perfect as cut flowers due to their long vase life of over a week, if cut in the bud. They also excel as excellent specimen plants and in groups for borders and beds in city or cottage gardens.
Try to find a position of sun or partial shade, ideally away from trees or shrubs as peonies don’t like to compete for food and moisture. Plant in humus rich soil and water in well.
These stunning peonies combine beautifully with roses, bearded irises and other striking perennials to create breathtaking displays and a delightful fragrance.
