Pentland Javelin Seed Potatoes are an all-round, diverse, early new potato. A ‘Heritage Potato’, they have white skin, short oval tubers and pure white flesh that has a firm but waxy texture giving a mild tasting flavour.

Known for their good resistance to potato scab, mild mosaic virus, slugs and bruising, Pentland Javelin Seed Potatoes keep their shape well through cooking and are ideal for boiling, steaming, salads and sautéing.

If planted in March then they will be ready for harvest approximately 10-12 weeks later around June and July.

Alternatively, they can be planted later in the year, during the summer, for a harvest through autumn and Christmas, just in time for the Christmas dinner.

How to plant

When planting potatoes, such as Pentland Javelin, wait until March onwards and plant 10cm deep and 20cm apart in a line. Leave at least 30cm between lines to allow growing space.

Prior to planting, encourage Seed Potatoes to sprout by placing them on a cool, bright windowsill for 4-6 weeks. This process is known as ‘chitting’ and will help prepare the potato tuber for going in the ground.

Once planted, ‘earth up’ the potatoes by drawing the soil up around new shoots to protect them from frost damage and prolong the growing time. Earthing up also protects developing potatoes from sunlight which causes them to turn green and poisonous. Keep potatoes well watered during warm weather.

How to harvest

When ready to harvest, cut back the stalks to ground level before gently lifting the plant up with a garden fork.

Carefully remove the potatoes from the plant and wash well before use in the kitchen.
