A recipient of the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, Paeonia Lactiflora ‘Bowl of Beauty’ is incredibly beautiful in bloom.

Blooming around late spring or early summer, it produces large anemone-shaped blossoms that are a rich rose-pink on the outside and densely packed with narrow, creamy-white petaloids at their heart. This herbaceous perennial grows in a lush, bushy mound of green foliage, reaching up to 90 cm in height and 75 cm of spread.

The blooms make for excellent cut flowers with a vase life of up to two weeks however peonies can also be very useful and adaptable in the garden. These hardy perennials are perfect for bordering a walk or driveway as an informal hedge and look idyllic when planted in groups throughout borders and beds in city and cottage gardens.

Peonies are a long-term investment for your garden, potentially not flowering within their first year, however, over time flower production will increase as plants establish with peonies able to live upwards of 50 years.

Peonies do not like being moved so try to find a permanent position with good air circulation and full sun light, never under trees. Plant bare root clumps approximately 10 cm deep and at least 50 cm apart with a sprinkling of Rootgrow at the base of the planting hole. Make sure that the eyes of the peony roots are no more than 3-5 cm below the soil surface.

Tubers planted in the ground shouldn’t need watering unless it’s a very dry spring however a balanced slow-release fertiliser should be applied in spring around the base of the plant. We also recommend mulching, away from the crown, with well-rotted compost. It is important to avoid burying the crown otherwise it might stop flowering.

Some peonies may need staking while deadheading can help the plant save energy during its early years.
