The Mespilus germanica ‘Nottingham’ Medlar Tree produces fruit that is considered the best for flavour, and is perfect for enjoying with port and cheese. This unusual fruit was a favourite of the Victorians who enjoyed it in jellies, jams and chutneys, adding an interesting caramel-like flavour to their dishes.

A lesson in patience, to get the most from this fruit you need to ‘Blett’ it before eating – a nice way of saying that you need to pop it on a windowsill for a few weeks, until the skin turns wrinkly. Then you will be rewarded with a delicious apple puree-like fruit to enjoy.

You won’t find this fruit in your local supermarket, and it’s easy to see why. The fruit itself has a slightly gnarled appearance, but the tree’s wide range of ornamental features more than make up for this. With its twisting stems, that rival an olive tree, wonderful frilly edged bright white flowers and golden autumnal foliage, there is something to admire throughout the seasons.

The delightful Medlar Tree makes a wonderful addition to cottage or informal gardens, or it will attract birds and bees into your wildlife gardens. Its wonderful flat topped and weeping crown looks magnificent and make this tree a wonderful addition to a range of outdoor spaces.

This ‘Nottingham’ (Medlar) Tree is available on Mono rootstock, which is semi-dwarfing making it ideal for smaller gardens. Additionally, mono rootstocks often exhibit good disease resistance and vigor, which ensure healthy and productive trees. The height of a Medlar tree on Mono rootstock can vary depending on growing conditions, but it is generally expected to be around 8-12 feet tall.
