Maris Peer Seed Potatoes consist of very uniform cream skinned oval tubers with a firm but waxy, cream flesh giving a light fresh flavour.
They are excellent for salads as the tubers are small and are delicious when eaten either hot or cold. These planting potatoes are also ideal for growing in pots or containers as their purple flowers are very fragrant and offer a great show.
Maris Peer Second Early potato tubers should be planted outside from March onwards, 10cm deep and 20cm apart in a line, leaving at least 30cm between the lines to allow space to grow.
Prior to planting, Seed Potatoes should be encouraged to sprout by being placed on a cool, bright windowsill for 4-6 weeks. This process is commonly called ‘chitting’ and will help to prepare the potato tuber for going in the ground.
Once planted, draw soil up around new shoots to protect them from frost damage and prolong the growing time. This process also protects developing potatoes from sunlight which causes them to turn green and poisonous. Keep potatoes well watered during warm dry weather.
Second Early Seed Potatoes should be ready to harvest in July and August, approximately 14-16 weeks after plating. When ready to harvest, cut back haulms (plant stalks) to ground level before gently lifting the plant up with a garden fork.
Carefully remove the potatoes from the plant and wash well before use in the kitchen.
