A household favourite, Kestrel Second Early Seed Potatoes are a great all-round variety, with excellent cooking qualities and a scrumptious taste.

It is a high yielding variety which has natural disease and blight resistance. This resistance to disease makes it easy to grow, producing potatoes with an attractive white skin and violet eyes, with a consistent size and shape.

These long oval tubers have creamy soft textured flesh with a slightly sweet flavour. They are ideal for a wide range of culinary uses including mashing, chipping, roasting and baking.

How to plant

Before planting, encourage Seed Potatoes to sprout by placing them on a cool, bright windowsill for 4-6 weeks. This process is known as ‘chitting’ and will help prepare the potato tuber for going in the ground.

Second Early potato tubers, such as Kestrel, should be planted outside from March onwards, 10cm deep and 20cm apart in a line.

Once planted, draw soil up around new shoots to protect them from frost damage and prolong the growing time. Earthing up in this way also protects developing potatoes from sunlight which causes them to turn green and poisonous. Keep potatoes well watered during warm weather.

How to harvest

When ready to harvest, approximately 14-16 weeks after planting, cut back the plant stalks to ground level before gently lifting the plant up with a garden fork.

Carefully remove the potatoes from the plant and wash well before use in the kitchen.
