Kelkay Horticultural Alpine Grit is washed angular grit that’s perfect for use as a decorative mulch placed around alpines or in rock gardens and flower beds. It’s also fantastic for layering on patios, pathways and drives.
Using this grit as a garden mulch is a great way to suppress weeds and deter slugs naturally. When mixed with compost It can also improve soil drainage and aeration so your plants won’t get waterlogged.
When placed in containers, it aids moisture retention, so your soil won’t dry out as quickly.
Tips from the experts
- Mix compost and alpine grit in equal parts to within 12.7cm of the rim
- Level off then plant, starting in a corner and working across
- Finish with a thin layer of grit to prevent leaves rotting
- Plant your alpine plants a little high leaving space for a 2cm deep collar of alpine grit
