Gladioli are a wonderful flower to admire throughout the summer months and look particularly striking when grown in pots and containers to brighten patio and balcony areas or added to beds and borders for colour-filled displays. We love them planted alongside Begonias and Lily’s for a display with contrasting shape, texture and height.
To get the best floral display plant your Gladioli bulbs in clusters of five or more, roughly 10cm deep and 10cm apart. Find a position of full sun and somewhere that is sheltered from the wind. Water gladioli regularly during dry weather and add mulch to conserve moisture. After the buds have formed, consider if you need to stake the stems, if so, do this around 5cm from the base, avoiding the bulb – it isn’t essential to stake the stems, but it does ensure that they don’t flop over when flowering.
