Gladioli Giant Flowering ‘Peter Pears’, named after the English tenor, is one of the classics in Gladioli history and was first introduced in 1958. Popular with gardeners ever since, it has beautiful full flowers in a deep apricot-peach tone along tall spikes of bloom which erupt from fans of sword-shaped leaves.
A florist’s dream as a cut flower, this Gladiolus is pastel perfection in a cottage or informal garden scheme. This colour will brilliantly complement blues and violets in a mixed border so consider planting it among other perennials like Lavenders and Salvias or other Gladioli such as ‘Blue Mountain’ or ‘Plum Tart’.
We recommend planting in two week intervals throughout March into June to ensure a long flowering succession with an expected time to flower of around 70-90 days.
For the best results, plant in clusters of five or more in a position of full sun with each bulb 10 cm deep and 10 cm apart. If possible, separate groups of bulbs with some flowers saved for cutting throughout the summer and the rest for garden display.
Water well throughout the growing season, and, if possible, lift the bulbs at the end of the season when the leaves turn yellow-brown and store them in a cool, dry, frost-free spot over the winter months.
