Originating from grasslands and sparse woods in Turkey and the Balkans, Crocus biflorus ‘Blue Pearl’ is versatile and easy to grow. The bulbs produce lilac-blue flowers, with outer petals, a darker shade and the inner petals a shade paler with a gold centre.

The bulbs will bloom in February and March and are suited to naturalising in unmown grass or in sunny parts of rockeries and borders. They can also be used in pots and container on patios or terraces and can even be used in window boxes.

They are best planted around 5cm deep in tight clusters to form drifts. Crocus will grow in a wide range of soils provided there is good drainage. They like sunshine but the flowers will last longer in partial shade. When planting, place wire netting just under the soil surface to prevent mice of squirrels eating the corms.

If growing these bulbs in grass, be sure to avoid mowing until all of the leaves have completely died back.
