‘Charlotte’ Second Early Seed Potatoes grow into exceptionally tasty potatoes that are perfect as classic new potatoes to enjoy during the festive season. Quick to mature, they have a smooth waxy texture and a delicious nutty taste that makes them a festive favourite.
A winner of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, this variety is reliable in form, colour and yield, with excellent resistance to pests and disease. They tend to form a pear shape with yellow skin and creamy yellow flesh with an excellent flavour, that can be eaten either hot or cold.
Planting Guide
We recommend planting Second Early potato tubers, such as ‘Charlotte’, outside from late June until September. Plant 10-13cm/4-5″ deep, making sure to leave around 20-23cm/ 8-9″ between each tuber.
They are suitable for growing in pots or containers as well as in the garden. Make sure to use ample good quality multi-purpose compost and keep the potatoes well-watered.
Once the plants reach a height of around 10-13cm, ‘earth up’ the potatoes by drawing the soil up around new shoots to protect them from frost damage and prolong the growing time. Earthing up also protects developing potatoes from sunlight which causes them to turn green and poisonous.
Harvesting Guide
Potatoes should be ready in approximately 12 weeks, or after flowering. Harvest only as required, leaving the remainder in situ for up to a month.
For a Christmas harvest, make sure to move any containers or potato bags to a frost-free area and cover garden potatoes with a layer of insulation.
