Growth Technology BetterGrow Perlite is ideal for use in potting mixes to improve drainage and aeration and to prevent compaction. It is excellent at retaining moisture in the soil mix, to ensure a consistent supply of water for plants.
Perlite is made from a naturally-occurring volcanic rock which is heated to 1,000 degrees Centigrade until it expands like a kind of volcanic popcorn. Being sterile, lightweight and very porous, it is stable, long lasting and neither acidic or alkaline, so it won’t affect soil PH.
How to use
Cuttings:
- Use up to 50% by volume (1:2) of Perlite in the mix for extra aeration and drainage
- Cuttings can also be rooted in pure Perlite with more regular watering
Repotting plants:
- African violets, mediterranean herbs and other plants sensitive to overly wet soil will benefit from incorporating about 20% of Perlite by volume into the mix
Tips from the experts
- To minimise dust, it is advisable to moisten the Perlite with water through misting or dampening before mixing
- Always use in a well-ventilated area and use gloves
- Store in dry, frost-free location
