A recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, Colchicum ‘Waterlily’ appears out of the soil as if by magic. No leaves, just a full petaled lilac-pink flower on a bare stem.

Commonly known as Naked Ladies, these and other Autumn Crocuses pop up in September, October or November before their leaves which then stick around until mid-summer, long after the flowers have died back.

Colchicum ‘Waterlily’ bulbs are best for planting at the front of sun-trapped borders or left to naturalise in unmown grass or wildflower patches. Plant bulbs where they’ll have a background of foliage, or put them on their own to make the sprouting colour really stand out.

This bulb is best planted 8cm deep and around 15cm apart from other bulbs, in full sun or partial shade and will grow in a wide range of soils provided there is good drainage.
