The Colchicum Autumnale ‘Album’ ghostly white flowers appear in the autumn without any leaves or foliage, giving them the moniker ‘The Naked Ladies’ or ‘Naked Boys’. A recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, this variety is generally reliable and consistent with excellent disease and pest resistance.
Part of the RHS Plants for Pollinators collection, this variety is excellent for attracting bees and other large pollinators into the garden. It is also perfect for naturalising (leaving in for flowers year after year) in wild gardens, rockeries and between shrubs.
The bulb for this rare white flower can be planted in July or autumn. The leaves and seeds will appear in the spring, and will then die off, the following summer, encouraging the goblet-shaped flowers to bloom in autumn.
These bulbs are best planted 8cm deep and around 15cm apart, in full sun or partial shade and will grow in a wide range of soils provided there is good drainage.
